The process known as the Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) brings adults to the sacraments of Christian initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. The process is successfully used for persons who are not baptized; for baptized Christians who have been members of another denomination and seek to be received into full communion with the Catholic Church; and for baptized Catholics who are uncatechized and need either Confirmation and/or Eucharist. RCIA involves the entire parish community which is called to be a witness to those seeking to become Catholic or to be fully initiated into the Church. Sponsors witness in a special way as they accompany the catechumens and candidates during their journey. |
